Quick and Healthy Snacks
It’s 5:00 pm. You’re home from school, lunch was five hours ago, dinner is not for another two and a half hours, and you are hungry! Before you grab the bag of Doritos, and before you open up a can of Coke, consider that there might be better options for you to snack on!
1. A tuna fish sandwich. Tuna should never be underestimated! Slather on some no-fat mayonnaise, grab a couple of slices of high-fiber bread, and a fresh fruit, and you’re good to go!
2. Nuts and dried fruits. If you need something that only takes a second and is packed with nutrients, try mixing nuts and dried fruits. Almonds mixed with dried cherries is a great combination, and you can get creative with this snack!
3. 100 calorie packs. Need something quick to grab and go? Most snack producers are now coming out with 100 calorie packs. Hostess Cakes, Nabisco, etc, you name it! These will help fill you up, give you some extra energy, and they’re not unhealthy!
4. Leftover food. There’s nothing better than a reheated slice of pizza! (Well maybe a few better things, but not many!) Don’t be afraid to warm up leftovers from the night before. They’ll probably be more filling than most snacks, and they tend to be more balanced snacks.
5. Chips and Salsa. Not all chips are bad! If you are really craving them, opt for some tortilla chips that are low in salt. Add some healthy salsa with chunks of veggies, and you’re good to go!
6. Apples and peanut butter. Apples and peanut butter never fail! Slice some apples, smear the peanut butter on, and you’ve got a healthy and sweet snack! Stores are now carrying cool variations of peanut butter. In my cupboard right now: cranberry vanilla peanut butter. Mmmm!
7. Edamame. Have you ever heard of these? They are japanese soybeans. While they don’t so good, they taste spectacular! You can find them in the produce section of the grocery store, they’re usually in little plastic boxes. Warm them up in the microwave (or eat them cold!) and sprinkle some salt on them. That’s all there is to it!
8. Raw veggies with sauce. Everyone knows that carrots and ranch dressing are heavenly. Try other veggies too, and give some chip salsas a try. Mix it up, and you might find your new favorite snack!
9. Nuts with yogurt. If you get tired of nuts with dried fruit, try adding nuts do yogurt. If you’re feeling really brave, add some fruits into the mix and let the flavors go wild!
10. Oatmeal with strawberry. Normally, oatmeal is kind of boring. But add some bits of fruit, and you’ve made a whole new dish! It will fill you up quickly, and leave your tongue happy!
